West Village Church started when a missions pastor travelled to Colombia to observe a native church planting network fueled by faith in a God who could transform a neighbourhood through the local church.
Chris and Darci Kovac began to gather a group of people to pray about planting a similar church in their neighbourhood of Westdale in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. West Village church held its first service on September 7, 2025.
When Jesus was asked to identify the most important rule in God’s law, He said it comes down to this:
Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind — and love others the same way you love yourself. Every other rule, law, or teaching in the Bible can be boiled down to these two things.
Our purpose and mission are deeply intertwined. To truly love God and others, we must be rooted in a dynamic relationship with God through Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This is the essence of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Given this, it’s only natural that Jesus entrusted the Church with the mission of making disciples.
We believe the Bible to be the complete Word of God; that the sixty-six books, as originally written, comprising the Old and New Testaments, were inspired by the Spirit of God and were entirely free from error; that the Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice and the true basis of the Christian life.
We believe there’s one God. He made everything. He’s holy, in control, and has always existed. He’s three-in-one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, equal and united.
We believe Jesus is fully God. He existed with the Father before He ever came to earth. He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, died in our place, rose from the dead, returned to heaven in victory, is now standing in the gap for us, and one day He’s coming back.
We believe the Holy Spirit is fully God and personally active in the world today. He helps people see their need for Jesus by showing them what’s wrong, what’s right, and what’s coming. He gives new life, helps us grow more like Jesus, gives us understanding, brings comfort, teaches us, and leads those who trust in Christ.
We believe that Satan exists as an evil personality, the originator of sin, the archenemy of God and man.
We believe that God created men and women in His image. But they chose to sin, and that broke their relationship with God. Because of that, we’re all guilty, spiritually lost, and can’t fix things on our own. Sin brought both physical and spiritual death into the world.
We believe that salvation is a gift from God; it’s all because of His grace and choosing. Jesus willingly died in our place to take the punishment we deserved and to make things right between us and God. We’re made right with God (justified) by putting our faith in what Jesus did through His death and resurrection. Everyone God truly calls will be kept by Him and, in the end, made fully like Jesus.
We believe that Jesus is coming back personally, physically, and in glory. One day, everyone, both the saved and the lost, will be raised from the dead. Those who belong to Jesus will enjoy eternal life with Him, and those who reject Him will face judgment and eternal separation from God.
We believe a church is a group of people who’ve been born again and called by God to live for Jesus, set apart from the ways of the world. They’ve come together willingly to learn and share God’s Word, build each other up, spread the good news, and practice what Jesus taught, like baptism and communion. Each church is independent and led by Jesus Himself, using the gifts and guidance He gives. The leaders of the church are called elders and deacons.
We believe the church has two main practices, based on the New Testament, that should be done regularly and in this order: First, baptism, where a believer is fully dipped in water to follow Jesus’ command and show they’re connected to His death, burial, and resurrection. Second, the Lord’s Supper, a special meal where believers eat bread and drink wine (or juice) to remember Jesus’ body and blood and to proclaim His death until He returns.
We believe Sunday, the first day of the week, is the Lord’s Day. It’s a special day God set aside for worship and focusing on our spiritual life.
We believe marriage is a lifelong, God-designed covenant between one man and one woman. It’s meant to be a committed, loving, and exclusive relationship, marked by leaving your family of origin, becoming one physically and emotionally, and, often, raising children together. It’s a space for deep companionship, sexual intimacy, and building a family.
In marriage, husbands and wives take on distinct roles that reflect how Jesus loves the Church. Husbands lead with sacrificial love, and wives respond with trust and support, both serving each other in love.
Marriage is meant to be lived out according to God’s Word, across all cultures and backgrounds. Still, singleness is also a gift. For some, God calls them to an undivided focus on Him through a life of wholehearted service. Both paths, married or single, are valuable in God’s kingdom.
Genesis 2:18–24; Ephesians 5:22–33; 1 Corinthians 7; Matthew 19:4–6
We believe in the complete separation of church and state.
We believe in religious liberty; that every man has the right to practise and propagate his beliefs.
We believe that government is set up by God to keep society safe and orderly. Leaders should be prayed for, respected, and obeyed (unless they ask us to go against Jesus’ teachings). Jesus is the ultimate authority over our hearts and all rulers.
